A Little More About Me

For those who are interested in knowing more about me, I decided to take the time to tell you a little bit more about myself.

I’m an ESL teacher and student advisor, and I love it. I’ve been teaching for more than six years and honestly, sometimes I think I learn more than my students. I am fortunate enough to work with students from all over the world, so I feel like my learning never ends. Almost one year ago I started working as a student advisor for international students as well and this has been an incredible opportunity to learn even more about my students. I get to help these students make big decisions about their studies and career path. I help them figure out what they are passionate about and encourage them to chase after their dreams. It isn’t always easy, but there is never a dull moment. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to find a job where I can help people the way others helped me on my path and I definitely feel that I’m doing that now.

I used to live in South Korea. In 2013, Mike and I moved to South Korea so I could pursue a job opportunity teaching at a university. At the time we had been dating for just over a year and decided to jump head first and move halfway around the world with each other. During that time we got to travel all over the country, see all kinds of amazing things and try some seriously delicious food. It wasn’t all amazing, but it was a life-changing experience that taught me some invaluable life lessons. Still, Mike and I will fid ourselves sitting at home, laughing and reminiscing about “that one time in Korea…”

I love to travel. For me, nothing fills my cup so to speak quite like travelling. Travelling has been a big part of mine and Mike’s relationship. We’ve been together for over 5 years and in that time we have travelled to places like Alaska, Japan, Philippines, Mexico and many others. We are looking forward to our trip this summer to England and Scotland to visit some of my family and celebrate our first wedding anniversary. For me, travelling is something that excites me. I love to explore the culture, the food and meet the people that make each place come alive. Whether it is shopping in New York City, relaxing on the beach in Montego Bay or wandering the streets of Rome, I’m game.

I also love to cook. Ever since I was a kid, some of my fondest memories have been in the kitchen: baking Christmas cookies with my grandma, helping my mom make her homemade chili sauce in the fall, taste-testing my dad’s famous beef curry. Over the years, my taste in food has evolved from Macaroni and Cheese to Salmon en Papillote. I love trying new recipes, experimenting with flavour combinations and sharing meals with family and friends.

I’m a big DIY-er. I learned to crochet when I was in university and since then I’ve made scarves, blankets, even sweaters. I make jewelry, decorations for my home and even furniture. My dad and I built my dining room table and Mike and I built our coffee table and accent table in our living room.  I love shopping at Michael’s and whenever I go shopping, I’m always thinking about how I could make the things I see. Not only is it sometimes cheaper to DIY, but it’s fun and you get such a sense of accomplishment when you see your hard work pay off.

Well, that’s it for now – looking forward to catching up with you more!
